A job task scam—often called a task scam—is a fake online job or side hustle where scammers claim you can earn money by completing simple activities such as rating products, clicking buttons, “optimizing” listings, liking content, or processing supposed orders.

The scam usually works like this:

1. You receive an unsolicited job offer, often by text, WhatsApp, Telegram, or social media. The work sounds unusually easy for the promised pay.

2. They put you on a website or app that displays tasks, commissions, and an account balance. It may look like a legitimate work platform.

3. They may actually pay you a small amount at first. This is important: an early payment doesn’t prove the job is legitimate. It can be bait designed to gain your trust.

4. Eventually, you’re told to deposit your own money to unlock additional tasks, cover a negative balance, complete a “combination” or “premium” task, or qualify for a larger commission. Cryptocurrency is particularly common.

5. The displayed earnings keep increasing, making it appear that you have made substantial money.

6. When you try to withdraw it, another payment is demanded—perhaps for taxes, verification, fees, or another task. The balance shown on the platform may simply be fabricated. Sending more money generally leads to additional demands rather than a withdrawal.

The biggest warning sign is having to pay money in order to earn or withdraw wages from a supposed job. Other red flags include recruiting through unexpected messages, extremely high pay for trivial work, pressure to use cryptocurrency, instructions to move conversations to Telegram or WhatsApp, and being asked to deposit increasingly large amounts.
